How to remove GST from a total amount
Formula: Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate/100) and GST = Total − Base. Intra-state: CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2.
Example: MRP ₹1,180 at 18% → ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. GST ₹180 (CGST ₹90 + SGST ₹90). Shortcut factors: 5% → ÷1.05, 18% → ÷1.18, 40% → ÷1.40.
Rates follow GST 2.0 (effective 22 Sep 2025): 5%, 18%, 40%, 0% exempt, 3% gold. Old 12% and 28% stay for earlier invoices. Results are for guidance; confirm the rate for your item with a tax professional.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove GST from a total amount? ▾
Divide the total by (1 + rate/100). For 18% GST: base = total ÷ 1.18. Example: ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, so GST = ₹180. For 5% divide by 1.05, for 40% divide by 1.40.
How do I remove 18% GST from ₹46,000? ▾
₹46,000 ÷ 1.18 = ₹38,983.05 base price. GST = ₹7,016.95, split as CGST ₹3,508.47 and SGST ₹3,508.48 for intra-state sales. Likewise, ₹47,200 including 18% GST has a base of ₹40,000.
Which GST rate should I choose? ▾
Use the rate printed on the invoice or applicable to the item. Under GST 2.0 (effective 22 Sep 2025) the main rates are 5%, 18% and 40%, with 0% for exempt items and 3% for gold. 12% and 28% remain here for older invoices. Not sure? The all-rates table shows every slab at once.
Is GST included in MRP? ▾
Yes. MRP in India is always inclusive of GST, so use reverse GST to find the pre-tax price. Example: MRP ₹590 at 18% gives a base of ₹500.
How can I find the GST rate from a bill? ▾
Use the Check My Bill box: enter the bill total and the GST amount charged. The tool works out the implied rate as GST ÷ (total − GST) × 100 and tells you which slab it matches.
