Free GST Number Validator India 2026 — Verify GSTIN Online

SuccessMate's GSTIN Validator instantly verifies any 15-character GST Identification Number using the official checksum algorithm (Luhn mod-36). It decodes the embedded state code, extracts the PAN, identifies entity number, and validates the check digit — all in your browser without sending data to any server. Used by business owners, accountants, CA firms, and compliance officers across India to verify vendor GSTINs before ITC claims and invoice processing.

Why Verify GSTIN Before Claiming ITC?

Fake or invalid GSTINs on supplier invoices can result in disallowed Input Tax Credit, GST notices, and penalties. If a vendor uses a cancelled GSTIN or an incorrectly formatted number, your ITC claim will be rejected in GSTR-2B reconciliation. This tool catches format errors, wrong state codes, invalid PAN structure, and incorrect check digits instantly — protecting your business from fraudulent suppliers and compliance risks.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is a GSTIN and how is it structured?
GSTIN (GST Identification Number) is a unique 15-character alphanumeric code assigned to every GST-registered business in India. Structure: First 2 digits = State code (01–38), Digits 3–12 = Taxpayer's PAN (10 characters), Digit 13 = Entity number (1–9 or A–Z for multiple registrations), Digit 14 = Always 'Z' (regular taxpayers), Digit 15 = Checksum (Luhn mod-36 algorithm). Example: 27AAPFU0939F1ZV → State 27 (Maharashtra), PAN AAPFU0939F, Entity 1, Type Z, Check V.
Does this tool confirm if a GSTIN is active or cancelled?
No. This tool validates the structure, format, state code, and checksum mathematically. It cannot confirm active/cancelled/suspended status — that requires a live lookup with the GST portal database. A GSTIN that passes all format checks may still be inactive if the business closed or surrendered registration. Always verify live status on gst.gov.in before claiming ITC.
What is the Luhn mod-36 checksum used in GSTIN?
The 15th character of a GSTIN is calculated using the Luhn mod-36 algorithm. Each of the first 14 characters is assigned a value (0–9 for digits, 10–35 for A–Z). Alternating characters are doubled. All values are summed in base 36. The check digit is the character that makes the total divisible by 36. This catches virtually every single-character typing error and most transposition errors — very similar to credit card number validation.
Why would a supplier have a different state code than their delivery location?
The state code in GSTIN represents the state of GST registration, not the delivery address. A supplier registered in Maharashtra (27) can deliver goods to any state. For inter-state transactions, IGST applies; for intra-state, CGST+SGST applies. A supplier with multiple registrations in different states will have different GSTINs for each state — same PAN but different state codes. Always verify the GSTIN against the invoice header.
What should I do if a vendor's GSTIN passes format check but shows cancelled on GST portal?
Do not accept the invoice for ITC. A cancelled GSTIN means the business is no longer registered under GST. If you claim ITC on such invoices, the department will reject your claim in GSTR-2B reconciliation and may issue a notice. Ask the supplier to provide their new GSTIN, or verify if they need to re-register. For high-value suppliers, perform GSTIN verification before onboarding and periodically during the business relationship.
